4. Crusading for Peace? The Idea of Peace in the Historia de profectione ...
30 jun 2023 · The text tells the story of a joint Danish-Norwegian crusade to the Holy Land in the early 1190s in the wake of the Third Crusade (1187-1192).
Near the end of the 12th century an anonymous canon at the Premonstratensian monastery in Tønsberg, in South-East Norway, wrote a text in Latin known as the Historia de profectione Danorum in Hierosolymam (Profectio). The text tells the story of a joint Danish-Norwegian crusade to the Holy Land in the early 1190s in the wake of the Third Crusade (1187-1192). The Profectio is little known outside Scandinavia but has also received little attention by scholars working within medieval Scandinavian studies. The following article presents an analysis of how the idea of peace forms a central theme in the Profectio, especially as the need for peace within Christendom was understood as a prerequisite for any successful crusade to the East. In certain key scenes, the narrative not only centres on the need for the Danes to stop their infighting, but also expands the scope to a national level with the reconciliation scenes between Danes and Norwegians.

9. Chapter 12 Byzantium and France in - Brill

Abstract This chapter examines relations between the Byzantine Empire and the Kingdom of France from the 10th century to the crusader conquest of Constantinople in 1204. Diplomatic relations, intercultural exchanges and other contacts between the two states seem to have been initially infrequent, but not nonexistent, only to increase dramatically as time progressed. The first part of the chapter explores Franco-Byzantine relations in the 10th and 11th centuries, the second part discusses Pope Gregory VII’s so-called “pre-crusade” plans of 1074 and their impact on France. The third section of the chapter discusses the First Crusade – an essentially French enterprise for the liberation of Eastern Christianity – and its effects on the Byzantine Empire. The fourth part addresses the repercussions of the creation of the Frankish principality of Antioch on Franco-Byzantine relations, the fifth covers the French expedition of the Second Crusade and its interaction with the Byzantines. The next section describes the thawing of relations between the Komnenian and Capetian courts in the 1160s and 1170s, and the final part investigates the Fourth Crusade and the French involvement in the campaign which resulted in the sack of Constantinople and the installation of a Flemish emperor on the Byzantine throne.
